In an effort to extend the range of the V-2, Peenemünde scientists were directed to develop an experimental winged version of the V-2, which was named the A-4b. Several A-4b rockets were test-flown, all had some sort of failure. However, on January 24, 1945, the A-4b reached a peak altitude of nearly 50 miles and a maximum speed of 8,858 miles per hour before entering a stable glide. Although a wingtip sheared off in flight, the test should have produced a range of 466 miles.
